Contigo, a Paso Fino gelding, was rescued in June 2012. He was only four years old and had been sold for meat. After bringing him home to Gateway we were able to trace his history.  He was imported from Colombia by a breeder in Ontario. We were able to contact this breeder and he advised us not to keep this horse. He said he was vicious, dangerous and “one bad apple.” He said under NO circumstances should we ever try to ride this horse.  He had nearly seriously hurt his trainer. Despite the thousands of dollars the owner had tied up in this horse, he finally gave up on him.
It wasn’t hard to see that this little fellow had some serious emotional damage. We started to apply our understanding of horse psychology and Contigo responded immediately. When he realized we weren’t going to hurt him or push him past his fear threshold, he began to relax and trust, to the point of letting us safely ride him. His true nature revealed itself and he became the sweet and gentle horse we know and love today.
