Shakira
2002-2024
We rescued Shakira as a 15 year old in September 2017. We often don’t get any background on our rescues, but it appeared that she had been a brood mare and was very thin and neglected. Even in that condition we could see that she was a beautiful Arabian mare.
You can tell a lot from a horse’s eyes, and Shakira’s big soft “doe” eyes were a perfect indication of her wonderful nature. She was a very kind, gentle soul and a really great therapy horse.
We knew when we rescued Shakira that she had weak suspensory tendons in her back legs. This condition is degenerative and over this past year we could see a real progression to the point where we felt she was in too much pain to carry on.
We thank God for entrusting us with this “angel in horse hair” over the last seven years. Thank you Shakira for blessing us with your sweet sweet soul. Words cannot express how much you have meant to us and how much we will miss you.
August 20th, 2017 was an exciting day as we brought home our newest rescue, a little Arabian mare. This pathetic looking little horse was rescued by a friend of Gateway after hearing that the owner was shipping her to the meat auction. She was in very sad shape – bony, neglected hooves, ruined mane…. After three weeks in the good care of our friend, Kira came to join our Gateway family where she is continuing her rehab and now thriving. She has a very sweet nature and is very bright and willing to learn. We look forward to the joy she will bring our staff and students. It’s hard to understand how someone would discard a lovely horse like this.
